Atopic dermatitis, better known as eczema, is a recurrent, chronic skin disease, clinically characterized by the presence of inflammatory lesions in typical locations according to the patient’s age. This problem is highly pruriginous especially in the inflamed areas. It’s frequently associated to other atopic conditions such as allergic rhinitis and asthma, and in many cases there’s a pre-existing family precedent of atopic dermatitis.

It principally affects children and, in 80% of cases, it manifests during the first year of life.

In Europe, it is estimated that about 10-20% of children are affected by the disease. Generally the condition tends to improve and even disappear with age, although it may remain throughout the sufferer’s life. The persistence of the disease is observed more commonly in cases where the appearance is later. Atopic dermatitis has a universal distribution and both sexes are equally affected.
